Creating a Website - Where to Start?

E-mail Print PDF

Building a site on the internet requires more than simply learning the HTML language and starting out. You need to get a place to put your Web pages, a domain name for your business, and to understand the legal issues surrounding Web pages and sites. This page and the resources in this section (free software) will help you get started building a website.

Here are 5 steps to help you make your own website.

1. Get a domain name. Your domain name is the name you want to give your website. Domain names generally only cost around $15.00 to register and you can do this at a number of sites such as godaddy.com. Sometimes your hosting company will offer free domain name registration when you sign up for a hosting account. Which brings us to step two of how to make your own website.

2. Find a web host to host your website. A hosting company is the company that connects your website to the world wide web. There are a lot of hosting companies out there that are basically a one stop shop: they will register your domain, host your website, provide  storage and transfer, email accounts, auto responders, web templates and even web editors.

3. Get a web editor. A web editor is the software program used to create web pages. It converts the text and content that you will write on your computer into HTML or "computer language" for your web hosting company to understand. As stated in step two your website host may provide you with a web editor or you can get your own.

4. Make your website. If you're creative you could start from scratch and design your website but this could take days or even weeks. Many prefer using web templates and again you can either get these from your web host or just Google "web templates." There are a lot of free templates out there to download and of course there are templates you can purchase.

5. Upload your site to your hosting company. Once you have made your website you need to upload it to your web hosting server. Believe it or not this is probably the easiest thing to do. You can either use your web editors publishing link or you can use what is called a FTP (file transfer protocol) client. I have found that using an FTP client is the easiest way to upload files.

6. If you don't want to go through all that then give us a call and we'll do it for you!
